I've tried blogging before and always start off with a big bang, but end up fizzling out soon afterwards. I'm hoping that I can keep this one up. I'm hoping that this can be a place where I can keep all of our loved ones up to date on the new journey our family has started on. For those of you that I haven't had a chance to talk to about it yet.... here it is. We are currently in the process to become licensed as a foster home. Our long term goal is to have a child placed with us and that we can end up becoming it's "forever family" and legally adopting it.
Adoption is something that J and I have always talked about. I was adopted myself, so since the beginning, when we were still dating, we've always wondered if it was something that we wanted to do ourselves. While we were always agreeable to it, we seemed to get caught up in life and the subject was sidelined for other things. Then, early this summer, I really feel like God was putting it on my heart again. It seemed like whether I was watching TV, reading a book, or talking to a friend, the subject of adoption kept coming up again and again. I mentioned it to J and he immediately said YES! I thought for sure that it was something that he was going to have to think about for a while, but he told me that he just felt like it was the right time for our family.
We always knew that if were going to adopt that we wanted to do it domestically. We have had several friends who have worked with a really great agency here in Houston so we emailed the agency to get some more information. After reading through it all and attending an orientation meeting, we decided that the best option for us and our family is the foster to adopt program. Basically what that means is that babies (we've requested 0-2 years old) will be placed in our home, but their biological families rights are not yet terminated. Since the agency knows that we are interested in adopting they will place babies who they believe more than likely will have the rights terminated eventually, for whatever reason.
So..... that's a brief (kind of ) explanation of it all. There's a lot more to all the details and scenarios, but I'll wait to share those as we go along. So far J and I have completed all of our paperwork, our training classes, and back ground checks. We got an email today saying that our file was being passed on to the home study section. Hopefully we will be getting a call soon to schedule that. After home study we will have to have a fire inspection at the house and TB tests done. Then we will officially be licensed! This has been a crazy whirlwind of a time! Please pray for our family as we begin this amazing journey. We are going to be needing them all!
